Exercise Is For Your Life Not Just For Christmas

As most of you know. My health and fitness has been really put to the test this year.

I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in February of this year. It’s not a well-known type of cancer so here’s a quick definition.

MM is a cancer arising from plasma cells, a type of white blood cell which is made in the bone marrow. it doesn't exist as a lump or tumor but can effect 'multiple' bones in your body

Without going into huge detail, In the summer I had 4 cycles of chemotherapy, to put me into remission and then a Stem Cell Transplant 2 months later.

Yes, not very pleasant. Any type of cancer treatment or chemotherapy is really quite horrible, to say the least.

The SCT was probably the most unpleasant. They hit you with High dose Chemo which kills off all your cells and then put back your healthy stem cells.

So for 3 days I had no bone marrow and therefore no immune system. It's a very weird feeling and really quite scary. You feel completely run down (like you can't get any lower), tired, wired, aching, nauseous.

Brrrr! It was horrible.

BUT my new stem cells kicked in and all my counts went up SUPER QUICK!! 

As my counts went up quickly I managed to miss some of the worst side effects from the Chemo.

Still felt pretty S@&*% though! lol

The average stay for something like this is 4 weeks. The docs thought I could do it in 2.5 weeks, if I was lucky.

I was released on Day 11! Nice

Don't get me wrong, it certainly wasn't easy and damn well horrible in places but my body is recovering very quickly indeed.

The docs said I have done so well because I was in such good shape and I've obviously looked after myself.  

At certain times when I was in there I did wonder about how someone who wasn’t in good shape, didn’t do much exercise and didn’t watch what they ate, how they would handle what they throw at you...and they do throw a lot.

The thing is, the general attitude towards exercise in this country is that exercise is just for weight loss. It’s so boring.

"How many calories will that burn?"

"I need to fit into a bikini in 3 weeks so I better do something"

[Sigh]

Having a good level of all round fitness is just so important for your life and wellbeing, it's not just what the damn scale says.

Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t always looked after myself. I’ve definitely not been a saint in that department over the years. So I understand that it can be tricky but who knows what’s around the corner!?! Obesity, Diabetes, Cancer all these things are on the up…

  • 68.8% of adults are considered to be overweight or obese.
  • more than one in 16 people in the UK has diabetes (diagnosed or undiagnosed)
  • One in two people will develop Cancer at some point in their lives

Very scary stats.

So people need to stop making thousands of excuses, eating and drinking so much crap (a little's ok) and find some form of exercise that they like doing and just keep doing it, consistently and overtime. Don't just start an exercise regime when your birthday's coming up or Christmas is around the corner or it's the bikini season.

Ok, ok, ok.

I know what you’re going to say.

Believe me, I know how difficult it can be, busy home life, busy work life, socials, friends, family, stress....Argh!...the list is endless but to be honest THEY’RE ALL JUST EXCUSES.

Find the time. It's so important!!

Find time for yourself, get some more sleep, start managing your stress levels, eat your veggies, drink lots of water and lift some heavy weights (at least twice a week including women)...and   JUST KEEP DOING IT!!

You'll feel so much better. I promise.
