7 Signs You Need More Sleep

  1. You’re always Hungry

Not getting enough sleep can trigger the hunger hormone (ghrelin) to increase in your gut. "If the brain is not getting the energy it needs from sleep it will often try to get it from food," a statement concluded from findings at Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine in Virginia.

Let’s be realistic, how often (when we are starving hungry) do we plan and prepare a nutritious, low carb, thought-out meal? Never! We run to the sweets cupboard and snack on the first thing available - biscuits, chocolate bars, bread. Anything that will spark your energy back up, fast.

And that energy will be sparked up, guaranteed - but at the expense of a lot of quick weight gain! And we do not want that! Plus a lack of sleep has detrimental effects on your metabolism by making it work slower, so it’s a double blow.

  1. You’ve Got a Bad Memory

Research from the National Institutes of Health concludes that sleep helps clear toxic molecules from the brain. Therefore not getting enough sleep regularly could impair your brain's ability to keep the nervous system clear, which disturbs your focus - no wonder you can’t remember what you did, you were hardly paying attention!

Getting enough sleep is crucial for brain health, so it stands to reason that when you’re not getting enough of it, you can’t quickly remember what you did last night, last week or even last month. Don’t worry though, this effect can be turned around when you start getting consistent good night’s sleep.

  1. Seem to Have Trouble Making Decisions

Sleep deprivation can affect the speed with which you process information. That means essential functions, like problem solving or time management, become even more difficult to carry out.

Poor sleep simply hinders your ability to react quickly - that’s why you should never drive when you’re tired!

  1. Your Emotions are All Over The Place

Things that normally haven't gotten you worked up in the past, such as a sad film or big, stressful work deadline, may provoke anxiety, sadness, or anger. It can also go the opposite way - people who are overtired can get surges of energy and feel giddy as well.

So if one minute you’re skipping around the office all full of beans even though you know you’re running on empty, and then next minute sobbing at a sad advert on telly, you know you might need to be getting more shut eye!

  1. Getting Sick More Often

Your immune system can take a real battering if you haven’t been sleeping enough. In particular, you may find it hard to keep fighting off coughs and colds.

Researchers found that people who got less than 7 hours of sleep were nearly 3 times as likely to develop a cold than those who got 8 hours or more rest a night.

  1. Dull Skin

While you're sleeping, your skin works to repair any damaged cells, and not getting enough rest can disrupt the process - so you can legitimately say, I need to get my beauty sleep!

On a more scientific level, lack of sleep upsets your hormonal balance and elevates estrogen levels, so not only can you expect more spots and breakouts when you miss out on rest, your skin may also appear older and dull looking.

  1. Daydream and Nod-Off Without Even Realising

When you nod off for a few seconds without even knowing, it's called micro-sleep. The brain basically says, 'I don't care what you want to do. We are going to sleep’.

That is great if you’re already in bed, tucked up with the lights out, but if you’re at work, in a meeting or even driving, it can be embarrassing, rude and downright dangerous! Make sure you are getting enough sleep especially if you drive often - it’s not just you at risk but also the lives of others on the road!

If you’ve experienced one or more of these signs you need more sleep, perhaps start making it a priority in your life. After all, you can’t be very productive if you’re not even awake!
