What do you drink before bedtime?

This can have a major effect on how you sleep and the sort of sleep you have.

Lots of different factors affect how we sleep our stress levels, what exercise we have done, what we drink. As well as obviously what time we go to bed.

It is important to go to bed a regular time every night as well as turn off electronic devices that can interfere with our sleep. But what we drink before we snuggle up is also important to consider.

If you have a cup of coffee before bed, the caffeine resets your body clock by delaying a rise in the level of melatonin, the body's chief sleep hormone. This hormone tells your body the natural time to go to sleep and wake up, therefore making it much more difficult to fall asleep.

Drinking water before bedtime is one of the best ways to help your body store those nutrients and minerals you need to stay healthy and strong found in water.

If you enjoy a warm beverage to get you in the mood for sleep then why not try a bedtime tea. As well as being mainly water, they also contain a lot of herbal medicinal extracts to aid in a good nights sleep:

  • Licorice root – this herb has been used for thousands of years to aid in healthy digestion and support the skin and liver

  • Spearmint leaf – this is a very soothing extract and helps clear the mind and senses ready for a good nights sleep, as well as being a great support to your respiratory system.

  • Chamomile flower – this herb is a great relaxant and helps to promote good sleep

  • Skullcap leaf – (yes this a real thing) this has been used for thousands of years to enhance meditation and awareness and helps with the body’s ability with emotional and physical calming

  • Cardamom – this is part of the ginger family and in a similar way to licorice helps to support a healthy digestive system to aid on good rested sleep patterns.

So next time you are looking for a good bedtime drink, or indeed struggle to get to sleep then try a bedtime tea.
