Did you know some of the healthiest people in the world eat a lot of carbs!


Yes you heard me correctly, they eat carbs!!


And who are they …. The japanese.


They have the second highest life expectancy in the world, and have an obesity rate of only 3.5%!! And they are 15% less likely to die of strokes or cardiovascular disease.

Their nutrition guidelines reflect the country's traditional diet which is high in grains, fish, soybean products.


But how can they eat so many grains and not get fat?


It’s because of the quality of the food they eat, their activity levels and the low amount of processed foods and sugar.


Carbs come in different forms too, there are your starchy carbs like rice, noodles, potatoes, but you also get your carbs from green vegetables.


The japanese also eat a lot of fish which is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which we in our diets are lacking.


They also eat very low amounts of processed foods, they make most of their meals from scratch.


On top of this, the average japanese person walks over 7,000 steps per day. While the average Brit walks less than 5,000. And a little fact you may not know, the trend of aiming for 10,000 steps per day actually started in Japan!!


Given their diet of whole, unprocessed foods, good active lifestyle, it’s no wonder the Japanese can tolerate more grains in their diet than we can.


If we as a nation can restrict our intake of refined sugar, processed foods and industrial seed oils and increase our intake of fish, omega 3’s, and the amount of daily exercise we do then we could tolerate eating more rice and grains.


So remember, there is no ‘correct’ way to eat nutritious foods - just different styles that suit different people.
