Do You Walk Enough?

How many of walk enough? And of those of us that do do we really push ourselves and get the most benefit from it?

How do you get to work? Do you tube it, drive, walk, bike, or even run?

Now that spring is finally on the way and we don’t have to carry all those heavy coats and umbrellas everywhere we go isn;t it time we gave our morning routine a wake up call.

I know a lot of us have a long way to travel, but even small changes like getting off the bus or tube 1 or 2 stops earlier can really make the difference.

Regular walking is proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes, asthma, and certain types of cancer. It’s also great for lifting your mood getting out in the fresh air and getting your heart rate and endorphin levels increased.

But in order to get the most out of your walk we all need to pick up the pace a little.

So, the average male weight in the UK is 13 stone and walking at the average 3mph will burn 144 calories, but if you increase the pace slightly to 4mph you will burn an extra 61 calories!!

The average women weight is 11 stone, and if they increase their pace to 4mph from 3moh they will burn 170 calories instead of 119!

When you are walking, a good marker to set is you should be able to talk but not sing. Your heart rate should be increased along with your lung function.

If you can’t walk to work, or a running late and can’t walk that extra stop then you can always try going for a brisk walk at lunch, not only will it burn some calories but also get you feeling refreshed ready to face the rest of the day.

Don’t forget the weekends too, get out in the local countryside with the family, or the dog. We are spoilt in this country for the amount of walks so try something new this weekend.
