If you are trying to lose weight in a controlled and healthy way, resulting in your being able to keep it off, a great rule of thumb is eat clean 80-90% of the time. For the other 10-20% just be mindful, so watch your portion sizes, the types of food i.e. processed foods and high sugar foods.


Here are 4 easy to follow rules to keep in mind when you are trying to lose weight and generally eat a healthy nutritious diet:


Protein and Veggies


When in doubt you can never go wrong with lean protein and lots of veggies. At least half your plate should contain veggies and leafy greens. Limit starchy veggies like carrots, squashes and potatoes. The other half mostly protein, as it takes longer for your body to burn and so will keep you feeling fuller for longer. Try and include some healthy fats like walnuts, avocado, olive oil etc, but around the size of a thumb will do.


No Snacking


Stick to 3-4 main meals, if your portion sizes are right and have the right amount of each macro on your plate then you won’t need to snack. If you do get the urge then opt for things like protein  (eggs or a shake) or whole fruits so you are getting the fibre too.


One plate rule


If you go to a restaurant or party and there are lots of food choices, limit yourself to one good portioned plate, dont keep going back for seconds and thirds, or resist the need to order a dessert.


Never miss twice


We all enjoy, me included, and cheat meal every so often. Whether it’s a pizza, indian or fish and chips, and its ok to do that. Just try not to miss a healthy meal twice in a row. So if you have a pizza, make sure you have planned the next meal to be a healthy one so you aren’t grabbing something quick again.
